[question] strogification and placing dirt
« on: September 03, 2011, 09:48:26 pm »

Ok so I have two major questions on how I would go about doing two things, one is probably incredably easy while the other isn't.

How would I set up the ability to embark with blocks of dirt to place in a flying fortress to create gardens?

Is it possible and where would I start for the process of being able to surgicaly replace my dwarves limbs and such with mechanical pieces, because cyborg dwarves sound like nice soldiers. Replace arms and legs with steel clad mechanical work for better durability, strength and speed or maybe even replace organs with mechanical parts to save the lives of injured dwarves, or make them into tougher soldiers.
It would create applications for civilian and military use, woodcutter have to arms? Build him some! Soldiers need to be tougher? Strogificate them.

How would I go about these things or if someone else would like to take a hand at the last one, (because I doubt I even could get close) I bet it'd get a lot of downloads.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.  The obvious solution is to chain the baby up at the entrance as a kobold detector.

Neither are possible at this point, I'm pretty sure.

The first is totally impossible. The closest you could get would be to spread some mud around with water so grass starts growing.

The second is impossible in that you can't add body parts to an already existing creature (hopefully in the future when Toady overcomes the problems with true Frankenstein monsters) but you can approximate having cyborg dwarves through the use of castes. You can create different castes with different body plans and abilities. You can also change "natural skills" and learning rates. For your example of the multi-armed woodcutter you could create a caste of dwarf who starts off with natural skill in woodcutting and has extra metal arms (maybe chainsaw arms with a unique attack). That's about as close as you can get currently.

You can place some ground tiles around with "gibbed's tweak utility", or place obsidian walls via magma + water, then muddy that. DFhack has liquid placing ability if you don't mind cheating to get this quicker than having to do it properly.

You could actually mod "blocks of dirt" to embark with but any walls you built with them would be normal block walls, not natural dirt walls.

Actually, DFHack does have a utility/plugin called tiletypes that allows you to paint many kinds of tiles, which I assume would include soil.  It isn't well-documented, but someone in the latest DFHack thread just went over how to select materials for painting with the 31.25 plugin version, so check there.

Thanks I'll look into that, dirt being a major need on my current fort project as getting water pumping there is kind of a large task. Hopefully toady gets frankenstein monsters sorted out so we can have a machine-punk era of cyborg dwarves.
