Power Supply Recommendations
« on: September 20, 2011, 02:49:07 pm »

So, I'm pretty new to "building" a computer. I can't truly say I'm building one, as I got my computer fully assembled. However, from the moment I saw this thing's specs, I knew what my weakest link would be. The graphics card. A crappy 5450 HD, and with a flimsy 300W psu to boot. Now I want to upgrade my GPU, and I have a nice Radeon 6850 in mind... But I have no idea what to do about my power supply. I've read up on how to install GPUs and all that, and I know what I'd need and why I need to upgrade my power supply, but I just have no idea what power supplies will work with my system... So I'm asking for help.

My current specs are:
Athlon II x4 620 Processor (2.6Ghz per core)
4GB of DDR3 RAM
Radeon 5450 Graphics Card
GF615M-P33 Mainboard
and Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Any recommendations or advice? I'll be honest, this is my first time replacing a component in my computer, so really, any advice is welcome. (Also keep in mind the 6850 requires at least 500W.) Thanks. :P

Clearly, this represents six side-by-side wheelbarrows, as indicated by the right half of the icon.  The left half indicates they are carrying babies with hats in these wheelbarrows.

Presumably, they are lining up to dump them into the baby furnaces.

I recommend a PSU by Corsair. Slightly more expensive, but I haven't had any trouble with this one.

Yeah, I've heard Corsairs are pretty well built, but I'm more interested in understanding whether or not the PSU will be compatible. I mean, are they all the same? As in, do they all have the same amount/type of power connectors? I'd hate to get this and then find it to be incompatible...
