I have a war dog that single handedly killed a Hill Giant made of amber. It had freezing breath too. I got a warning of it's invasion like a Forgotten Beast but it came topside, not from a cavern. This war dog got wrecked. Parts are missing. Every goddamn limb is broken. But no arteries are torn and he's not really bleeding. Just heavily unconscious.

Is there a way to get him medical help? I have a hospital and a kennel.

Your butcher can help him, ending the poor creature's pain and allowing him to serve the fortress one last time.  (Actually, multiple times, depending on how much meat you get).

You could have it restrained somewhere and use it as bait. Maybe another giant beast can bend the bones the other way?

Isn't this what animal caretaking is for, except for the fact that they're bugged(?). Stupid vets.

Well since animal caretaking is bugged you need to either

A: Kill it
B: Chain it
C: Cage it
D: Butcher it
E: Edit the raws so dogs regenerate nervous tissue and also regnerate that 8th leg you added to the dog. Also give it firebreath make it Fire_Immune and SuperFire_Immune
consult the dragons for more info.

We all wish it was so, but currently animal caretaking does exactly nothing in-game except provide another way to get crossbows and bolts from immigrant rangers.

He died of infection... :(

I wish your war animals could not only be healed/tended, but would gain combat experience (or hunting experience depending)...

I have nothing for healing except maybe turning regeneration a few magnitudes up in the raws, but I've added [CAN_LEARN] to my dog/elephant/gorilla/etc raws, and penned them into my goblinite mine: stripped gobbo falls 5 z-levels into a pit full of snarling war animals and dies in a storm of claws and teeth. I have up to Competent fighters, biters, dodgers, strikers... and surprisingly, armor users.

They also get lots of social skill, in my last fortress a dog was elected Major. I couldn't assign it any rooms, but it didn't have any mandates either :P
