Dwarves with rooms still sleep in barracks?
« on: March 02, 2008, 02:09:00 pm »

I've noticed that some of my dwarves who own rooms (and aren't currently being evicted or are moving) have been sleeping in my barracks where they get unhappy thoughts from not sleeping in a proper room.  If they have a room, why aren't they using it?

EDIT:

I just noticed that one dwarf has a wife and son.  Him and his wife both sleep in a barracks even though they own a room but their son, owns his own room and sleeps there.

I've noticed that Hunters refuse to sleep indoors. Hippies.

Check "View squad" from the Military screen.  Their squad is probably currently under orders to sleep in barracks instead of their own rooms.

This also happens if the barracks is more valuable than the bedroom they're assigned. They then complain about not sleeping in a proper room.

This problem also shows up with dwarves eating at built unowned chairs in offices. They then complain about enough tables.

A quick fix would probably to have dwarves pick the room which would give them the most happiness.

They're not, nor have the ever been, part of the military.

I suppose it's very possible for the barracks to be more valuable than their room since it's larger.  But that seems silly.

I also don't understand why the child owns a separate room and actually sleeps in it.

This is why EVERY single one of my nobles gets both an office and a dining room in one: he owns both pieces of furniture both designated as a room.

Draco: That causes both 'rooms' to be worth 1/4 as much due to overlap.  I just always put a table in the office, they get that for free and never seems to cause problems...

I've never had to stuff that much into a room though.  I think it's only worth 1/2 because there are two rooms--which makes sense: I have to double-fill it, or dig a room and move all the stuff around, using the same amount of value only in two rooms (well, less because of all the new walls and floor, but...).
