Scheduling question.
« on: August 30, 2011, 05:16:48 pm »

I think I got the scheduling system down pretty well (theoretically), so ask me anything in return as payment for my following question:

I think I already know the answer is "no" but is there a way to have a dwarf be a civilian half the time (doing masonry work or whatever) and stand on guard/train/play soldier the other half other than by drafting him into/out off the military manually from the (m)ilitary->(p)ositions screen? and would this mentally work? (I remember drafting/undrafting used to give a bad thought not sure if it still does, but would a dwarf, in theory, go insane from being drafted into the military and send back to hauling stones 6 times a year?)

Military dwarves will be civilians if they don't have any active orders, so for instance if you made a schedule for a 10 dwarf squad where only 4 were required to train at any given time, the other 6 would likely be doing civilian work. You can, if you wish to micromanage to that extent, set each monthly order to prefer specific dwarves for active duty, and thereby ensure each dwarf has regular off time.

As for dwarves getting annoyed due to drafting/undrafting, they won't like being made active if they have no military skills, and won't like going off duty if they have no civilian skills.

Basically:
Soldier -> undrafted -> Peasant = unhappy thought
Soldier -> undrafted -> Soapmaker = completely fine

Likewise:
Civilian -> drafted -> Recruit = unhappy thought
Civilian -> drafted -> Hammerdwarf = fine

Keep in mind that unless they're legendary (Hammer Lord etc) soldiers don't like to be on active duty for too long.

Ah, thanks for the explanation. From the wikia I got that a soldier with an empty spot in their schedule would go to the barracks and train on their own.  Do they do that if there's no civvy job for them to do?

They'll do that if they're on the "Inactive" alert, but technically will still be civilians. And they'll also still do civilian jobs, yeah. On other alerts, they won't train unless specifically scheduled to do so.

They won't do it if they don't have a barracks to train at.
