Best materials for weapons?
« on: August 30, 2011, 08:39:37 am »

Hi everyone!

I already know that "candyfloss" is the best material for edged weapons, followed by steel, and that silver is the best for hammers.

But what are the second, third and etc options?

I'd like to make some competent hammerdwarves but I have no silver whatsoever, I do have copper and iron in ample quantities, and some gold too...

What would be the recommendations?

I've heard that bronze is pretty good, although the only metal I ever use for weapons is steel. Iron isn't bad, but if you have iron, you might as well make steel.

Notes in the raws suggest that the important values for how well metals perform in combat is determined by their density, impact strength, shear strength, and possible max_edge.  Here the ratings for metals which can be used for weapons and armor:

Code: [Select]
SOLID_DENSITY
              SILVER  10490
              COPPER  8930
              BRONZE  8250
      BISMUTH_BRONZE  8250
               STEEL  7850
                IRON  7850
          ADAMANTINE  200

IMPACT_YIELD
          ADAMANTINE  5000000
               STEEL  1505000
              BRONZE  602000
      BISMUTH_BRONZE  602000
                IRON  542500
              SILVER  350000
              COPPER  245000

SHEAR_YIELD
          ADAMANTINE  5000000
               STEEL  430000
              BRONZE  172000
      BISMUTH_BRONZE  172000
                IRON  155000
              SILVER  100000
              COPPER  70000

MAX_EDGE
          ADAMANTINE  100000
               STEEL  10000
              SILVER  10000
                IRON  10000
              COPPER  10000
              BRONZE  10000
      BISMUTH_BRONZE  10000

So by this data a cooper warhammer would be better than a steel one?

If warhammer effectiveness is determined by density, then copper is a slightly better material than steel for warhammers.  So is bronze, although neither is as good as silver.  Copper is still the worst metal for armor.  Bronze is much better than copper for armor, and slightly better than iron, but not nearly as good as steel.  Adamantine is great for armor, great for cutting weapons, and ludicrously bad for hammers.
