Can dwarven children die from training spear traps?
« on: August 28, 2011, 01:43:45 pm »

I want to create a danger room to train up my dwarves faster, but unfortunately one of my top military dwarves has two children that constantly follow her around, even into the barracks while she trains! So if I send her into a danger room, I think they will follow her, too. Will they be able to train up with her, or are they going to get injured?

Well this is a hint:make sure she has good life insurance on the kids.
Something that will help is to create a burrow that covers everywhere but the dangerroom. Use this for the civ alert, and activate it. Used this way, you do not have to assign dwarves to it.
If fertile myrtle winds up having another baby, this will not help. Baby will become a shish kabob.

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.
Sincerely,
The Administration

With effort, you might get her into the danger room without the child. You could use a locked door, for example.

But then what have you accomplished? When she goes into battle, the child will follow her and get killed. Then you'll have a well-armed, combat-trained female dwarf going berzerk in your fortress.

And it's no good to train the women who don't have children, because you never know when they'll pop a baby out. Maybe in the danger room, or during a battle.

I don't train women for melee at all. Maybe give the women crossbows and put them behind fortifications. Even then their little tykes might get shot, but it's your best option.

Is there any indication of the dwarf's sex when selecting him/her on the military screen? Viewing them one by one gets very boring in very short time.

Zip. Zero. None. Even other dwarves need to converse extensively with one another before they can guess the gender of another dwarf.

Which makes flirting a delicate dance indeed.  No wonder my dwarfs so rarely marry.

Just use Dwarf Therapist, seperate the dorfs by sex, and there you go! Just use a custom profession and shift select dwarves you want in the squad, assign them to a new profession, and just look for them on the military screen.

Most certainly yes, my first dwarf death ever on my first fortress was an impaled dwarf kiddie in my first danger room, the idiot mother brought it in with her

Lol, I'm not sure that the idiot mom knew that the fortress overseer was intending to try to impale her on spikes a few thousand times.  Not the first thing you think of when the boss tells you, "Quick!  Go station in the basement!"  She might have rethought elsewise.

You don't have to put all of your dwarves in a danger room, you know.  You could just station the ones without kids there.

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...<P>It should be pretty fun though.

Another easy fix (for those of you who make the world as you like it) is to reduce the child caps to 0 (numeric) and 0% (percentage as function of adults).

This may not entirely fix things (I think you can still get child migrants), but it does generally stop "Urist McBadMom has given birth!" from being followed by "Urist McFellOutOfTheWrongWomb has been struck down!" because McBadMom can't be bothered to secure daycare.
