suspending from supports?

Is it possible to hang a piece of 'ground' from a support? As in build a support on a tile connecting it to the roof, and then mining all around that tile and bellow it? or will the support fail and cause the tile to fall?

Supports work from above and below, if that's what you mean.  You can hang a stalactite from the roof.
