I have to agree that usually in these cases male pronouns are used when speaking English on the internet in situations where gender is unknown. After all, most people seem to prefer to be called 'he' than 'it', and English lacks pronouns for 'I know this person has a gender but I don't know what it is'. However, in the list of 'crimes against explicit and easy communication' which can be levelled against the English language, that is one of the more minor infractions.

On the other hand, sensible people would make an exception if the person's name contains the word 'girl'.
