Fortified Lookouts?

hi,
i've tried to build some kind of fortified lookouts. i thout it might be a good idea to put some fortifications in my outer fortress wall so i can spot invaders and ambushers before they enter. so far so good. next idea was that i chain dogs behind each fortification so the lookout is always occupied.workes quite well, untill some invaders with bows come and kill the chained dogs. so i thought i improve the idea and i put a window between the dog and the fortification!

but now they wont spot any invaders :(
arent windows transparent?

But short of the lookout boxes, I think if you take out the fortification and put the window in its place that the dogs should see through.

It has been proven with testing that creatures have to be in a 3-tile range of the spotter before they can be detected. Outside of this range, a dabbling ambusher can walk in circles around a grand master observer without being seen. I just confirmed this is still true for 31.25.

The detection area is a 7x7x7 cube, with the spotter on the center tile.

I've seen them spot people 20+ tiles away. I'm going to need to see this testing. Perhaps trees were obstructing your view?
