Not Looking to good.
« on: February 15, 2012, 10:07:20 pm »

So, My Fortress is only one level into the mountain because Everything underneath that layer seems to be damp soil. On Top of that I have a million flies in my fortress because my dwarf's are just putting the food in the stockpile as is. How do I solve this problem? Make barrels? AND the first two Migrant waves were two people each. But other than that everything seems to be ok. I have some traps and some farms for food and a butcher. But the flies, How do I make the food not attract them?

Build a craftsdorfs workshop, and start spamming rock pots :)

Pots for food? Will the Dwarf's automatically put the food in them?

Yes, Large Pots act as barrels, and require one boulder to use.

Also you may have encountered an aquifer, check out the wiki for details on how to punch through it.

I recommend Wooden Barrels if you have a good amount of wood/trees, otherwise, keep any wood you have for beds. An interesting way to start with enough barrels for whatever it is you need storing is by tweaking your embarking supplies. Go for rock pots if you have hit rock layers, otherwise, try the steps below.

To do so, when deciding to bring food, bring 1 of every type of meat available (e.g. 1 x rabbit meat, 1 x cow meat, etc.) that has the lowest cost (2 Embark Points or EP each if I'm not mistaken, to save on costs). The more meat you bring, the more free barrels you get (e.g. 40 meat, each one a different type, will net you 40 barrels). When I say different, I mean meat from different animals, not body parts (e.g. brain, heart, eyes, etc.). Once the meat has been eaten, the barrel will remain for other uses.

If you need free bags (good place to store seeds), bringing along 1 of each type of seed available, or you can bring sand as well. Keep in mind the costs when doing so.

All of the above is written here and then some :)

You might want to take a look at some sample starting builds, though they would most likely be outdated now. Good reference materials though :D

An even cheaper way to get free bags is bringing a lot of sand. Each unit only costs 1 EP and comes with its own bag. And you can churn out a few serrated discs for initial traps.
