Need talk and type technology for computer.
« on: August 20, 2011, 05:02:39 pm »

I type, a lot. It is so immensely annoying holding 3 reference books while I do and constantly cross referencing each of them while trying to stick my fingers on the keys.... Seriously, if I didn't have to juggle like this, we're talking 40 minutes to an hour saved in my day.

That said, is there a program where I can talk into my headset microphone and text appears on a computer screen, like in microsoft word or something? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

P.S. I'm willing to pay for speech to text if I have to.

Sure, it exists. Like its cousin, handwriting recognition software, it also has a tendency to insert nasty little typos everywhere. I feel the following old anecdote applies:
Quote
The original Apple Newton was the first PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) capable of [transcribing handwriting], and was even supposed to improve its recognition of the individual owner's writing with practice. In practice, it didn't work too well. Hence the joke:

    Q. How many Newton users does it take to change a lightbulb?
    A. Foux! There to eat lemons, axe gravy soup.

That said, I haven't tried voice-to-text for some years so it might have improved, and it also depends a lot on your voice and accent. As long as you make sure to proofread afterwards it might be worth looking into.

If you want to try it out and have Windows Vista or 7, then a voice-to-text system comes preinstalled. Take a look in your control panel and see if there is something called "Speech Recognition" there.

There's This

I have a friend who had to use it in college, and he says it's pretty good.

olemars,

I just want to say thank you so much for letting me know about this technology. It is making my life 1000 times easier.  Even though I have to watch out for the corrections I need to make, that is still much better than trying to type 80 words a minute. There are some bugs, but I think I can get used to those.

Yours truly,

Truean

Edit: I'm probably having too much fun with this.
