So... meat of unspecified origins that costs nothing. Seems to be a bug, no?

My thoughts -exactly-. I almost named the thread 'spam', but I figured it might get skipped over....

On that note:

It seems to be related to elks and cave crocodiles....

This is because you didn't start a new world. Stuff messes up when you either edit the raws or on a lot of new versions; old savegames are rarely compatible with newer versions.

I generated this world with the new version.

But did you copy the files on top of the old version, or do a clean install?

That happened to me, before, when I didn't do a clean install.

Moreover, having that meat in my inventory when embarking would cause an immediate crash to desktop.

Haven't seen it in a clean install, yet.

I've had it happen to me before on clean install. Restarting Dwarf Fortress made it go away, though.
