Well, if baby's mother is a soldier, it will die soon. Especially if you are sending the mother to explore&clean these caverns filled of voracious cave crawlers, blind cave ogres and giant cave spiders.
Once in my fort a voracious cave crawler threw a mother with her baby in a deep chasm. She survived, but the baby didn't

Build a spiral staircase and run a waterfall down it. The dwarves will drop their babies when the water hits them.

fairly often mothers seem to drop their babies in the moat, the only problem with this is that you can't retrieve the bodies to bury them.

that's not a MAJOR problem, you can just engrave a slab instead if they come back..
