Four Hydras At Embark
« on: August 14, 2011, 03:16:30 pm »

So... I like to play with LOTS of Megabeasts and Titans.

Well, I embarked in a 3x3 area with a volcano, one cavern layer, aaaand....

Lamenkos, "Stonetook", a Hydra lair.

This would be normal to me for the most part. If not for the fact that... Well, there are FOUR Hydras.

My first thought was, "WHAT GENDERS?"

Well, there are 3 males... and one female.

Now, I understand you can't trap creatures in the same map that their lair exists. (Learned this the hard way after attempting to cage a Giant, who then proceeded to destroy 80% of my fledgling fort.)

So, some questions.

1. Can I breed them if I can capture and tame them? (I play without need of dungeon-masters, seeing as they are heavily bugged.)
2. Do they use nest boxes?
3. How would I cage trap these things? Cave in or GCS my only options?

1. Yes if you tame them just beware they dont hurt or kill anyone otherwise the dorfs will be picking fights with him.
2. Don't know look in the raws
3. To trap them I think you need to wait till you hit a pop of 80 then they'll become hostile I think

This is all based on thoughts and earlier questions so I don't know if it'll work.

I got fed up with my fortress, so I decided to kill everyone (abandon is for elves) with a cave-in.

OK, cave-ins were always pretty deadly, but with the new falling object damage they are downright brutal.  As far as I can make out from the logs, many people were killed by the flying bodies of other victims.  One baby's corpse ricocheted off three other people, two walls and the floor.

Actually, in the world generation stuff, I changed the Titan population and wealth requirement to MUCH lower, will that effect when they become hostile?

I belive once a named creature has killed a dwarf from Civ A, it will always be hostile to dwarves from Civ A, even if tamed. A dwarf from Civ B might be fine.

1. I believe so, but they are megabeasts so I'm not sure.
2. I believe so. They might be missing a [CHILD:] token, but you can mod that in.
3. Yes, you need a giant cave spider or something else with a thick web. Genesis has forest spiders, at least.

Whatever you do though, don't let it kill a dwarf or it will stay berserk even after it's tamed. Lots of fun there.

Hydras don't have trapavoid, you don't need webs.

Hydras don't have trapavoid, you don't need webs.

They're residents, and thus avoid traps. I believe they can be stunned (such as by cave-in), but I'll have to check.

EDIT: Yeah, they have [NOSTUN]. You'll need GCS webs.
