Descendents of the French who were ethnically cleansed out of Acadia (modern-day Maritime Canada) in 1755 when the Brits took over, and who later settled in Louisiana.  Which is just as swampy and bug-ridden as Acadia; has even more seafood; and is about 30 C hotter.  Largely ignored by the authorities, so they were largely illiterate, so they sing really well (same goes for the acadians who resettled in Acadia post 1755).
