MULTIPLAYER programming/design games
« on: August 08, 2011, 02:48:15 pm »

Mindrover: The Europa Project.
DroidArena.
CoreWars.

These are all games where you build/code a robot or program, and set it loose against other players' stuff.  Kind of a layman's verson of those Starcraft bot competitions, but still at least a little hardcore.  They are also all >10 years old.

I'm looking for a modern game along these lines with an active community.  If at all possible, it should be browser-based with automatic matchmaking (ie, kill someone on your own schedule, don't arrange matches manually over email).  The thinkier, the better.

Writing bots to play online games against humans (chess, poker, Puzzle Pirates) is fun, but it's just not the same.

Robocode:

http://robocode.sourceforge.net/

Its fairly old as well, but its still being updated and I think the community is still active.

I don't think it has anything like matchmaking, but it does have tournaments.

RoboForge. Other than that and all the other stuff you mentioned, no idea. The genre seems to be dying out, pretty much.

Oooh, these kind of games are fun.
The only other one I know of is C++ Robots.

...but it meets none of those criteria.
