Favourite year/era to start your game?
« on: August 08, 2011, 08:28:41 am »

Hi,

Been playing for a little while now and have enjoyed creating new worlds. One thing I am not too sure of is just how long to leave the world to age before playing. So I was wondering at what point you prefer to stop aging your worlds and start playing?

Currently, my world is at around 200 years. I tend not to leave it too much longer than that simply because I'm not really sure what difference it makes.

The age and map is pretty much broken in this release. The roads and tunnels never (seem?) to form, you can't visit nonhuman towns, and anything above a small/tiny map never leaves the age of legends.

So I let it run until I loose patience. 3-5 hundred years.

I set the initial to year 2 and the final to year 3.  It speeds up world generation, and I get caravans and sieges and ambushes and forgotten beasts all as usual.  If there is an impact to fortress mode for this, I haven't found it yet.

Your civ doesn't have much/any time to expand, so your mineral selection tends to be a bit poorer. I know because I do this too.

I tend to wait to stop world gen until around year 120. My dwarf civ selections are usually greater, my supply selections are greater, and I get to see exactly how old my adult dwarfs are.

One hundred and twenty five years.

I used to be an expert at getting all sorts of odd and funky things to happen with legends; the fourth age of Myths in the year 2525 and so on and so forth, but alas, all that is long behind us and shall not soon come again.

I used to go to 1000 or further so that I could have fully grown dragons. Unfortunately, too many civs die out if I do that now.

I still have a vanilla .21 world which is about 1200 years old and haves a single dorf civ with two mountain halls and an amazingly appropriate name, "rumored vessels". Because worlds that old tend to be overrun by elves, and dorf are but a rumor.

The thing about such old worlds is that by then many semimegabeasts have died of old age.

I let the world gen for 125 years, otherwise it takes too long.

I've had a world cook for ten thousand years once. It was so huge and complicated that attempting to export the map and text made the game crash.

You see, here's how I think this works:
Overseer: Welcome to the military! You need to wear socks! Dorf: Oh, I should get military socks. My socks are civilian socks. Dorf discards socks Dorf: You know, I need a whole lot of gear now. I should get socks... last. Oh, but these steel boots with the white goo on them are nice!

I let the world gen for 99 years, so that I embark in year 100, makes keeping track of the age of the fortress a little easier.
