Animals not grazing?
« on: August 07, 2011, 11:27:23 pm »

I've put several grazing animals in separate pastures in a grass-filled field, and they're all dying of hunger. This happens even if I move the pastures to a different spot. They don't seem to eat the grass, just trample it, which I think is the problem. (And if they do, they just get stuck in starvation for perpetuity)

This is the first time I've ever had this problem and I'm not sure what's causing it. I am playing in an evil biome with the evil grasses removed (no dead flora and fauna though), but other grasses just grow in its place. I'm suspecting that it's because the grass is covered with snow most of the year. Is this a bug, and if so, how do I work around it?

What creatures are we talking about here? Elephants and Rhinos (Maybe Giraffes) cannot eat enough to keep them from starving. Water Buffalos and Yaks also require a lot of food. Also, how big are the pastures and how many critters are in the pastures?

I did have a yak that died, but now it's goats and horse foals and they're dying too. I gave them about 100-200 tiles of pasture, depending on how much they need to eat, and only one animal on each.

Well this is very fascinating because goats do not require a lot of grass.

Is it named grass like "xxx grass" or just generic 'grass'

Just generic "grass". The goat did recover from hunger before once I set her up in a pasture, but she turned hungry again and now she's starving.

That is why, some embarks are screwy like that. Generic 'grass' is not edible to creatures. The cause is probably that you removed the EVIL grass after the world was generated or after you embarked. Likewise it could just be bad luck. Either way, if you want to keep the fort open the save's raw files (data -> save -> raw -> object) open up the creature_domestic file and remove all the [GRAZER:xxx] tags.

Hm, I did generate the world after modifying the raws though. My last fortress was in a good biome with the good grass removed, and the animals there could graze, but there was more than one kind of grass in that area, so maybe it is bad luck. Thanks for the help, though.
