Demolished aquaduct flooded fortress!
« on: July 02, 2007, 07:14:00 pm »

Hey all,

Here's the culprit situation:

http://mkv25.net/dfma/viewmap.php?view_mapid=312

Click on the Fatal demolition point of interest.

Essentially:
- two aquaducts were slated to be removed.
- One was 3x3, the other 1x3 (vertical), both east-west openings.
- The 3x3 was parallel with the bridge, the 1x3 was one tile further south.
- By the time I noticed the flood, both aquaducts had been partially removed, and the 1x3 had two large 0s showing, while the 3x3 had four small os showing (the 1x3 was last to be removed).
- Somehow this allowed water onto land, but none of the aquaduct waterways were terminating on land.

Any clues, or is this a bug?

Aquaducts act like siphons. If you put one end into open water, it'll act like a perminate floodgate.

In fact, if you fail to put both ends of the aquaduct on solid ground, it'll begin to siphon.   :(

code:
Aquduct is 9 tiles wide:
#########
=========
#########

River is 7 tiles wide:
~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~
Ends of Aquaduct must be like this:
~~~~~~~
#XXXXXXX#
=-------=
#XXXXXXX#
~~~~~~~
Not like this:
 ~~~~~~~
##XXXXXXX
==-------
##XXXXXXX
 ~~~~~~~
Generally, removing anything that deals with liquids carries the risk of flood. Even in the next version, it will undoubtably still be possible to screw up and flood your entire fort (assuming the source liquid is infinite)
I don't even want to *think* of ways to perma-flood my fort using the Z-axis. I just know I'm gonna do something really stupid and flood all the lower levels of my fort. Like accidentally dig into a cave river while I'm below it.
Thanks for your help Mechanoid.
I'm not sure I understand the difference between yr models 3 and 4? And how does that apply to my aquaduct situation?? The water ends of them weren't touching land (well, one sort-of was, but I suspected it was gone before the flood started).
EDIT: Oh, I see now, model 3's A was extending over the land, while 4 wasn't.
I think with my fortress I'll hafta assume a) the larger aquaduct caused it somehow by b) the waterway flooding the three tiles abutting the A at the end (like the way A's tend to 'spray' the liquid out when they empty into the chasm).
Sigh.
 ;)
@ XGamer4:
Well, at least when you flood in the Z-axis, it's likely that anything above the floodwater source Z-level will be safe... Not like now, where as soon as you flood, the only thing that can stop disaster is a single rock door. That, and you'll ALWAYS be able to pump out the liquid that's flooded your fort; it just might take a while.
@ Faces:
Diagram 3 is a composite of 1 and 2. The aquaduct is over the river, both ends on dry land. Diagram 4 has shifted the aquaduct over to the left by one tile -- exposing the
end to the water, flooding the aquaduct.
The only problem with pumping out the liquid is that you'd have to block its inflow first.
Speaking of which, and expanding on the golems from another thread - what if you could make golems, or just plain suits, for doing stuff in water..  or maybe even magma. I kinda imagine a tempered steel golem taking a tempered steel floodgate through a tunnel filled with magma, sealing it off, and allowing the stuff to get pumped away or just cool down until it's rock.
Not until magic is in, i think. That and if it were abused you'd have little need for soldiers. [Of course, something to let dwarves breathe underwater would definitely be sweet... But lava should always be a killer.]
Glass terrariums on chain would help with the going underwater thing - tho there'd be no work getting done, just a nice get away.
Always build flood channels in case of emergency a flood running into an empty channel will not flood pass it.
