Newb Question: Emptying Cages
« on: July 29, 2011, 11:26:47 am »

Hi all.. I'm pretty new to DF, but i've got a nice little fort going with around 80-ish dwarfs.  I've just managed to survive a rather graphic goblin siege and captured about 20 goblins, trolls, giant toads, and cave alligators all in a bunch of cage traps.  So now I have a bunch of full cages.

I tried to drown them first with a flood trap, but apparently goblins don't need air in cages.  So I tried to assign my military to kill them, but that didn't work.  I finally realized I had to move the cages ("Build" them), and then release the occupants.  I tried that, and one braindead dwarf just transfers the goblin/hostile creature into another cage, and puts it back in the stockpile.

How do I get rid of these!!?

Put this in the gameplay questions subforum, and lots of people will answer you. I actually don't know off the top of my head, unfortunately... I haven't actually played Dwarf Fortress in about a year, though I am ALWAYS on these forums.

Flooding the area with magma removes blood, dust, vomit, goo, mud, and dwarves.
Also, I'm composing digital music over in the Forum Games part of the forums!

One method is to build them, link the cages to the lever from the lever's job menu, and then pull the lever.  It's time consuming, but there are few safe methods to emptying cages containing hostiles.  That's the safest.

If you want to kill the goblins opening the cages with the levers while they are inside your previously mentioned drowning chamber would probably be the easiest and most foolproof method.
