What sort of license is dwarf fortress under?
« on: July 25, 2011, 07:23:42 am »

I'm mainly looking at making a spinoff as programming practice (new language, and cloning awesome stuff is the best way to learn) and was just wondering if there's a public listing of the license, or what precedents there might be. I've seen stuff like Goblin camp which is clearly based off (And somewhat attributed to) DF, but wanted to know if something has been said before.

The copyright info is listed in the game's read-me file.

Indeed, and although it doesn't answer the question directly, it looks like it is ok.

I'll send an email I suppose, and it looks like I'll get a positive answer.

Ideas and concepts can't be copyright so there is nothing stopping you making something similar, although the images obviously are and de-compiling the code would be breaking the law in most countries.

However your likely to be moaned at if you didn't at least attribute DF to influence factors :) and asking is a nice way to do things anyway.

Oh, there would be full attribution, no worries. I understand enough of the rules, laws and general feelings of the way this stuff works to know enough to do THAT.

I just wondered if The Toad had put something in writing somewhere that detailed derivative works or not, and whether or not he had a known stance on the matter.

It's mainly practicing a tile engine in XNA anyway. Not a for-profit thing.

Good first step.  The community will be much more supportive of your efforts, regardless of similarity or influence, if you do so with the Toad's blessing.
