What doesn't kill me will only.... leave me crippled fo
« on: June 18, 2007, 01:32:00 pm »

All my Dwarves that sustain any sort of injury, never ever heal...

okay i don't have any hopes for the guy that lost 3 limbs.

But my peasant with a slightly hurt hand has been in bed for almost 2 years.  All my other injured dwarves just go insane!

The dwarves with red/yellow wounds don't heal very sensibly right now and are often lost to their dark thoughts.  It'll be handled when I get to scarring and infection.

I give my invalids honorable posts in the Fortress Guard.

The secret to getting dwarves to heal is twofold.  The first, is that the wounded dwarf successfully maintains the Rest job.  The second is lots and lots of patience.  If they are failing rest jobs, passing out from pain (blinking white X) they are likely doomed.  They'll get hungry, thirsty, drowsy and go insane.  Tough dwarves have a better chance of staying conscious and Resting successfully.

A couple tricks exist to reactivate a dwarf's rest job.  Try toggling him/her out of military service (Activate/Deactivate) or to use the [q] menu to unistall the bed they aren't Resting on.  Don't expect miracles though.

If you are sure they are gonna go, maybe spend a little effort making a modest tomb.  Their surviving loved ones will thank you.  If they are Resting, then prepare to wait 1, 2, 6 or more years ...  They will get their health back.  Eventually.

Also note that some internal injuries never heal, such as lungs, brain, spine. Although if that's the only injury, dwarves will recover and go about their business. (Except they won't spar.)

One of my dwarves did get a light gray wound to his brain, which healed some time later. However, he got the wound during a fight with the ratmen, and he also miraculously healed all his non-light-grey wounds (the worst were yellow) when he was dropped off at a bed. At that time, he still had the brain injury and one other light gray injury, but when I checked on him again later, they had healed.

Now I don't know if that indicates that brain injuries can heal, or if it just indicates that injuries caused by ratmen are rather temporary.
