Bogeyman Repellent for Vampires
« on: July 28, 2011, 03:36:37 am »

I'm thinking of ways to implement a playable nocturnal race of protovampires that lives in caves and gets damaged in sunlight but can't figure out a way that would make this really doable in adv. mode, mainly because of bogeymen, which would pretty much instantly kill you at the beginning of the game if you tried to go anywhere.  Is there a way to make bogeymen ignore certain races if the player is a member, or just disable them entirely since I dont feel that they really add anything to the game anyway?

Another option I looked into was having this race start in the underworld, so you'd basically have an adventure mode game that's entirely within the underworld, but that seems tedious since world map travel would be impossible.  Still, I think it would be a cool concept if there was more to do in the underworld.

If you're interested, the idea here is that this race is sort of the origin of the vampirism curse.  They are the beings who infected the first humans with vampirism, so its not a disease for them like it is for humans.  There's still alot thats uncertain about how I will develop them, since vampirism hasn't actually been added to DF yet, and I will change these creatures to accomodate how vampirism works when it is actually implemented.  But in the meantime I want to develop them according to classic vampire myths, so that they are super strong and heal fast, are not affected by darkness (still working out how that will work), and unable to bear the light of the sun, among other things.  Really the major obstacle at this point is the whole Bogeyman problem.

The only way to do something like that is to remove bogeymen. To do that, you need to set the number of night creature types to 0 in advanced worldgen. As to the rest, most is impossible now, but some might be possible next release.
