Animals can't drown

Animals don't drown.  I surrounded a trade depot with walls and pumped water into it.  It killed the elves but not their animals.

They are probably swimming.  Most animals have an innate swimming skill, while the civ-forming critters mostly don't know how to swim, unless they learned it specifically.

The water is 7/7.  Can they swim up one level for air?

Since there's no roof, they're essentially at the top of the 7/7 water and breathing air from the next level up. If you floor over the walled area, they'll probably drown. If rewalling properly works in that respect, of course, which I'm not completely sure it does.

Why do you want to kill their animals?  Just use count them as loot.

Yeah, elves don't have wagons.  The horses that are glued to the wagon (and probably the merchant as well) won't drown because of that special status, which is a bug.

Apparently human merchants can't drown either.  I had a bunch of them in 7/7 water and they didn't drown.

I just thought I'd chime in to say that I've bumped into this problem as well.  I recently started a fort under a elvish town. Some of the elves former pack animals failed to drown when I dumped them into a water filled pit.   The main problem I'm having is that the drown-immune trait seems to be inheritable, so I've got a ever growing number of aqua-donkeys in the bottom of a flooded pit.

Train them in the art of war and use them as a weapon against the Carp Menace.
