"Soldiers can go outside" / "dwarves stay
« on: September 03, 2006, 10:52:00 am »

I've tried this several times as the result of assorted outdoor threats.  All my civilian dwarves just ignore it, and keep on going outside to pick up wood or water or whatever the hell they were already doing.

It may be that it prevents _new_ outdoor jobs from being tasked, but that's useless; by the time the existing jobs are over, the outdoor threat is usually dealt with.

This seems to be related to the more general issue that jobs, once accepted, can't be interrupted in any determinable way. I wish we could align the unit list with the job list as we see fit (sometimes, of course, automatically most of the time). I agree though, I've had issue with the "Dwarves stay inside" order too...they keep going outside over and over.

For what it's worth, I've kept the "only soldiers go out" setting for about 3 months gametime now.  The civvies still keep on traipsing out whenever they like to pick up all the wood I'm telling them to chop down and bring in.  "Don't go out" should absolutely override that.

I agree that it needs to be fixed, but i think it should be more like:

- No dwarves can go outside
- Only soldiers can go outside
- Only soldiers and dwarves with jobs can go outside
- All dwarves can go outside

Agreed, Mechanoid. I think it's important to keep dwarves with jobs able to do what they need to.

Ok, this is not just a matter of pre-existing jobs continuing.  The dwarves COMPLETELY IGNORE the "don't go outside" setting.  I've had a seige that I kept going for more than a season - the humans arrived seeking revenge for their mad merchant baron, I pulled everyone inside and locked the doors, and they just camped there outside for three months straight.  My dwarves inside all got set to different jobs over time, I did a lot of redesignating stockpiles and so on to make sure there was nothing they were still trying to do outside.  Then I unlocked the doors.  Hey presto, everyone charges outside and across the river and gets massacred.

Yeah, the standing order to stay inside is ignored by almost every job.  I don't remember if building jobs see it, but that hardly matters.
