Dwarf Fortress, Fortress mode - Orchestral version!
« on: July 10, 2011, 01:47:09 pm »

I was just roaming around the net and checking out some Dwarf Fortress stuff...
And hit up on a orchestral version of the Dwarf Fortress background song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqPG8AHiiPQ

It seemed to be a straight "midi+instrument" kinda song. It was like the guitar was just replaced with strings only... and that's it.
So I decided to make my own version then!

It's still hardly work in progress, but I really wanted to share this with you people :D

I hope you like it any way. It's kinda advanced version of the song, but anyways. I liked making it  :)

Epic as anything ever. It's a much better orchestral adaptation because it does much more than just changing instruments to an orchestra. It makes the DF theme  Orchestra epic!

He who plays with dwarves must take care that he does not become a dwarf.  And when you stare into DwarfFort, Dwarffort stares back into you.

You transformed... The "piddling about doing nothing" theme into the "battle" theme?

I am not sure what to think about it... other then I think you may have to think about what you are doing for some of these sections as well..

To be truthful?

It sort of poor. You need to remember that not everything translates into a fast and rocking theme very well and that Dwarf Fortresses themes for the most part are "Ambience".

I think you should dial some of these back and instead imbue a sense of majesty. Possibly by using the DF themes as a downbeat (If I used the correct term).

Mind you some parts DO work for a battle or rocken theme and I'd love to see them expanded upon so you don't have the intercepting beats. It were these parts that I said things to myself like "Wow, if this was longer it could be the beat of Dracula's castle".

I can be more exact if you'd like but for the most part I know I shouldn't say anything negative about someone elses' work they do on their free time.

I disagree with Neonivek, I like the intensity of it the most. It's a different feeling from the original song, which is good, because straight covers aren't that exciting.

I would dial the tempo back a bit, though. Take it down 10 bpm, maybe?

I feels a little animated for DF in general, but I still like it.
I think part of the charm about the DF theme is that it feels like every day life for these dwarfs. It is cold and run down, but still full of prospects, of what they might uncover next in their mighty halls. It is no battle anthem, but a story of the struggles and triumphs of everyday life for the commoner. As such, when you try to 'epic it up' by adding the complexity of an orchestra, it isn't exactly fitting. Hell, that first, finished song reminded me more of a sonic the hedgehog cartoon than dwarf fortress.
But still, as music for the sake of music, you have done very well. Composing isn't an easy task, so I congratulate you on your work. Right now it sounds a little like if Santa was a dwarf and he is getting ready for the yearly run.

Haha, yeah. Thanks for the nice feedback, but I really can say this: It is really work in progress project. I can change this very much in there.

Also, the epic-themed thingy was just a test what can I do for it. Everything else in the beginning was just some fast stuff created on top of it. So of course, I'll change EVERYTHING over here, until it's finished and sounds appropriate enough.

And yes, I'll slow it down for a couple bmp's. I'll also take some requests if you have any, and I will definitely listen to them!

It isn't that, just keep listening to the opening verse and you will reach a section where the beat hits something along the lines of... da da da da da da da da da da da da da

Which is caused by its fast pace and rocken attitude.

Which only says that I didn't explain myself properly.
