Military in a nutshell guide?
« on: July 28, 2011, 10:17:36 am »

1.  Teacher + Squad leader w/ combat skills
= Faster training of recruits

2.  Squads much above 2 members do not work, because only 2 dwarves in one squad will spar?`

3.  How to train teacher and student skills?

1. If you mean a squad leader with the teacher skill, yes. But any dwarf in the squad can teach, regardless of skill or if they are the squad leader.

2. No, not true at all.

3. If no one in the squad has those skills, then they will individually train or spar until they have at least dabbling in a skill. Then they will sometimes try to teach that skill to the other recruits regardless of teacher skill. This will level up the teacher skill (and student skill in the students obviously), but slowly.

1. Danger room = fastest training of recruits

2. Squads above 2 members do work. Just because they do not spar does not mean they will not train. I find a squad of 5 works best though

3. The way to train teacher and student skills is to simply have the take part in or organize demonstrations. Probably better if you use a migrant who has a high teaching skill though as it takes quite a while to train

In my experience, yes. I've had a three-way in my barracks once in a squad of three.

There is no nutshell big enough to encapsulate the DF military system neatly.

I can confirm that more than two dwarfs in a squad will spar, I've had up to 6 from a single squad before.

i made a danger room for the first time yesterday and it is amazing how fast you can get a full squad off legendaries, the only hard part i found is remembering which upright spears i have linked to the lever.

Although I like to think I have a decent grasp of the military, there is something I've been wondering lately, and it's closely related to the questions here:

How important is the teacher's level in whatever combat skill they're teaching?  For example, would dwarfs learn Fighting faster from a Legendary Fighter than a Competent Fighter, assuming their Teaching skill is the same?

Yep. Imagine a dabbling fighter trying to teach compared to a legendary one.

Ah, thanks.  But someone needs to tell my dwarfs that.  Once a recruit's seen a dodging demonstration, he thinks he can teach the class himself.
