[38a] Suddenly, cave spider!
« on: February 11, 2008, 04:57:00 am »

So I hit an underground river and I seal off the tunnel leading to it, since there's a fuckton of creatures down there.

About a year later, there's a silk web in the tunnels...

cave spiders are vermin that only appear near the cave river... like fire snakes on magma.
it isnt a bug.

edit: they arent GIGANT cave spiders... the little ones are vermin, and can only poison randomly some dwarf that passes near it. they are harmless.

Harmless?  I think not.  Cave spiders are the stuff of nightmares!

You'd think handing out the crossbows to brain damaged dwarfs would be a bad idea but it isn't

Minor cave spiders inject a venom that will periodically stun a dwarf, for the rest of their life.  Although giant cave spider venom often lasts the rest of one's life, that is due to different causes.  Little cave spiders are nasty.

Even the paralyzing phantom spiders are slightly better, because their bites will wear off soon enough.  Cave spider venom will just sit inside a dwarf and make them move slowly from time to time, permanently inhibiting their effectiveness.

Don't know if we can make it, but we certainly couldn't do anything with it if we had some.  That's waiting to be added in.

Instead, we've got priests that worship nonexistant gods, and invisible armies that fight each other and then disappear.

Ick, but I suppose it is in keeping with what happened.  The image on the totem appears to commemorate my weaver being bitten by cave spiders while foraging for silk.  I took his periodic stuns as him freezing in place then looking nervously around for the spiders, and refusing to move on until he was satisfied there weren't any nearby to bite him.

All it takes is the removal of one little tag inside the cave spider entry:

[EXTRACT_PERMANENT]

Et voila!  (in theory).

This could also be turned into a rather nasty attack if one used the paralyze venom instead.  Eternal sleep, anyone?  It would be perfect for quests once antivenin actually is given an effect, as you'd be sent to wake up a great adventurer (maybe even one of your own?) with a vial of the antidote.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

the only dwarves that pick silk on my fortress are the haulers... just with a little configuration on the looms you can make the highest level weavers to work in the loom, and the lower level weavers to work with the webs... and if some weavers gets enough level without being poisoned, i "promote" them. the poisoned ones finish his days on the caves.

In old 2d versions those who got injected with venom got the "hunting" duty.
