Non existant raccoons stealing non existant items
« on: May 15, 2007, 03:08:00 am »

While playing on a new world(no cheats involved) i suddenly got the message: A raccoon has stolen an (iron cap). problem being, i didn't have any iron caps(or any iron item other then picks and axes) and there were no raccoons on the map either.

I had to format my computer the day before so i had a clean version, a freshly generated world and no utilities installed.

One theory:
The iron caps originate from human trade guards fighting the elephants on your map?
Also I think the raccoon message only appears when the raccoon successfully leaves the map with the stolen goods?

Winter 1, no elephants and the dwarven caravan left without leaving anything behind.

I know only one common cause for non-existant raccoons stealing non-existant items: Too much dwarven rum.

Actually, Ive had this too.  I thought I just didn't see them but the problem continued through a few other forts I have, and at the very start just like the OP here.

I have occasionally had odd items appear in the very, very upper left corner of my map. Usually these are weapons and armor. I've found several sets of iron chain leggings and things like that, and its happened before any caravans arrived. I have no idea why that happens. But if a raccoon were to steal one of those items on the edge of the map, then leave, it could produce the behavior described, as the raccoon would vanish after stealing the item.

Yeah, I'm still not sure what's up with items appearing at the top left, and that's possibly where the cap came from.
