I built my first bin yesterday and it was quickly brought over to my Bars/Blocks stockpile.  Unfortunately I then had a slew of "Job canceled/Item Lost" messages relating to Dwarves standing around the bin with my various bars and blocks.  Does this mean the items are lost, or simply the dwarves have to try again, at the very least it would be helpful to know WHAT they were trying to store when the error occurred, also was the item lost?  

My guess is that someone else was using the bin at the time and it was locked from anyone else using it.  However, this seems a poor reason to cancel a job or destroy an item.  It makes more sense for them to queue up to use the bin doesn't it?

The problem arises if (for example) one dwarf decides to use the bin for coins, another for bars, and a third for crafts.  I'm not sure how it's decided, but let's say the dwarf with the crafts gets the bin.  The other two dwarves cancel their job not because anything was destroyed, but because the targeted bin is no longer compatable with the item they want to put in it.

EDIT:  Okay, I just read your post more carefully and it looks like everyone has bars or blocks.  I've never had any problems like that; I don't know what to tell you.

Perhaps the bin is full?  How many dwarves were standing around waiting to shove in blocks, anyway?

Probably about 6 looking to stuff more items in the bin.  It is possible they were varying items, but I think they were all Bars and such.  Does it matter that the bin was on a Bar/Block stockpile space?  

I saw more items get added later.  I assume the message doesn't necessarily mean the item is destroyed?

I guess it's more of a suggestion, but it would be really nice to know WHAT was being put into the stockpile.

The message usually doesn't mean that the item was destroyed.  Exceptions would generally involve rotting items.  To my knowledge there's no bug causing items to be destroyed when hauling jobs fail, or anything like that.

Okay, good to know.  I guess I wish there were a more specific message then.
