tools as weapons?

Certain tools can be used as weapons in adventure mode, but what about in fortress mode? Is there some way to make your dwarf use a meat cleaver or a scaling knife in a pinch? I've seen traders bring them on occasion, and I'm curious if they could be used in case of exceptionally low supplies.

If it can be assigned via the squad menu, then yes.  I don't recall ever seeing them as foreign weapons, though...  Otherwise, your dwarves will only haul them to and from stockpiles.
