Exceptional/Masterwork training weapons damage?
« on: July 02, 2011, 04:05:33 pm »

Do higher quality grade training weapons cause more damage during things like sparring?  I'd to not destroy my military before they've started.

I've had Dorf's wh ohave pulled a Monty Python's Black Knight. They've had limbs chopped off and just keep coming. Although most of those are my patented "Spartan Dwarfs."
except in DF, the "I'll bit your legs off" threat is serious.

Sparring wont cause any damage, even with masterwork steel weapons

Sparring accidents are almost non-existant now, regardless of what weapons are used. However, weapon (and mechanism if it's a trap) quality affects the chance to hit.

No damage is dealt during sparring, so no. They do deal more damage when not sparring, though. Probably, at least; how quality affects blunt weapons isn't understood AFAIK.

In previous versions, higher quality weapons did more damage but acted as a skill multiplier as well, and when a blow was struck during sparring sessions a skill check was made to see if the blow was harmless or not. There were debates as to whether the increased chance of harmless attacks compensated for the increased damage on a dangerous attack. However, anymore the skill check has been done away with and all blows during sparring sessions are completely harmless, so sparring with masterwork candy weapons is as safe as with no-quality wood weapons.

Haha. I remember when sparring sessions frequently led to recruits dying at the hands of their teacher. Not anymore, though. You should be safe even if they're using masterwork swords.

Try to stay low-grade for danger rooms, though. That can cause problems. Still not very likely.

So there's like no point in making training weapons any more?

The best use is for danger rooms. It's pretty safe to spar with regular weapons.

Training weapons are still good for training, you just need live targets. I tried something in arena mode earlier, a dwarf with leather and wood armor with training sword against a ironclad goblin. Trained up a lot and jabbed all of goblins' teeth out and got up to legendary in a few stats after a while. It's also good for fortress guards' beating  :D

Quality doesn't affect damage at all, only chance to hit, and then only masterworks (2x) and artifacts (3x).
Also, training weapons are still dangerous against exposed flesh.

Exposed flesh, but even clothing made from plant cloth can block most of the attacks.
