Retracted Bridge Height

When you retract a Bridge its z-height is always 1. As in, the bridge will act as a wall on its z-level and none above it, regardless of how long the bridge is. Realistically, the bridge should act as a wall on a number of levels above it as its length.

I think you meant 'raise' and not 'retract' (retracted bridges shouldn't block anything!)

And what if there isn't enough room?  This could get ugly...

Just think about it as a bridge that retracts as it raises.

You seem to be erroneously assuming that one x or y unit equals one z unit, but that seems highly unlikely. We don't actually know how tall one wall is, and for all we know, a bridge of maximum length (what is it, 8-10?) folds neatly up to exactly one z-level.

If one assumes that 10 horizontal squares = 1 vertical square, that would also assume that stairs are actually speeding escalators that zip dwarves up and down at record speeds. This is due to the fact that dwarves run up 10 levels of stairs just as quickly if not more quickly than running down a 10 square long hallway.

The fact that bridges don't take up multiple z levels when raised is probably just a game limitation. If that was added, the game would have to check z levels above the building site to see if you build build a raising bridge. Otherwise you'd have a bridge that magically sticks through and blocks off ground 9 levels above the level it is on. It would be a great trap if it was implemented though. Just build bridges that raise below the area in which you want to crush enemies, then have them magically raise through the floor and smash people in the hallway above when they step on a pressure plate.

Dont forget that the dwarves also fit sound amplifiers in the floors so sound will travel 10 times further down z-levels

You're all presuming that the physical dimensions of the Dwarf Fortress Universes are the same as ours, when we know they're not.  Some are longer in the north-south direction and skinny east-west.  Some are square.  Some can stretch themselves to accomodate the universe and some have the mysterious black void, unknown and unviewable.  Even time runs differently in different uh, parallel dimensions of the same 'seed', as measured in futures per second.  I expect later releases of the Dwarf Fortress Universe will clarify matters, but I personally believe it's futile to try and measure a bridge when it all depends on it's state.  Clearly, as it gains increasing angle from 0 in the z axis, it proportionally shortens until it's exactly 1 z level tall when fully raised and it's angle is 90.  Interesting how the change in length on the non-z to a single z at 90 is the same for any length of bridge.  Had we the ability to pause the bridge in the middle of this process, we would see this happening.  Perhaps we'll see raisable ramps that can raise to multiple levels for the next version.

-EDITED- Yeah, I mean raised, not retracted  ;)
