I learned that, when you put a goblin swordmaster in the arena, to check and check again if he is actually disarmed.

Bastard killed eight dwarves before they took him down  :o

I have learned that just because you think an aquifer is below you doesn't mean it is.

It's right in front of you.

And above you.

What's wrong with using magma? That's almost always the easiest method.
I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.

Today I learned that some dwarves have freakish powers of regeneration. That it is possible to have both legs mauled by an alligator, and to just 'walk it off', and be fine two days later, without any medical attention at all.

I learned what that CLT sign means on top of a workshop... that's why it took so long to make a door :)

Naked dwarves remove the need to produce more clothing, which means more of your pig tails can be brewed into booze.
I think this is less a problem and more an expression of dwarven priorities.

I now know that ...
Giant Scorpions as a defence are pretty decent.
Giant Scorpions's stingers go through iron plate.
Giant Scorpions's syndrome acts quickly.
Elves are not immune to syndrome. (I don't think anyway, they died very fast you see)
Giant Scorpions are awsome.
I love savage badlands.

I love when people facepalm on this one.  Mine took months and its such a massively game changing deal when you realise why things take an eternity to be built.

I got to learn that fire is an omni-directional tool of hatred and malice that cares not for it's target yet thirsts for the blood of the innocent, the guilty and all those in-between. Then I trapped the beast who made it and now the fire is mine! All hail the hell-fire!

I learned that Hunters make good Captains of the guard, since they're out hunting so much, they don't form strong bonds with anyone, so they tend to emotionally survive the tantrum spiral.

Whether they survive the dwarves is another matter...

I have learned that my game is very glitchy so I should save more, as I've just had the game crash on me after significant progress (through a siege).

Also, a lowly goblin swordsman surrounded by 15 dwarves mostly of great skill and all in decent armour can get a lucky shot in and remove an arm. Do not underestimate the power of the RNG. Luckily, that particular event didn't ever get saved because of the crash :P

I learned that while designing siege-busting water traps, you can never have enough drainage.

I learned that, when placing water source and fishing zones, said zones need to be adjacent to to the actual water rather than on top of said water.

Armor and weapons are all very fancy, but when it comes down to it there's nothing that can stop a 40+ peasant zerg.

That's what I learnd after I needed some way to deal with these constant ambushes. I haven't gotten any good metals to arm my dwarves so I decided to make one final united stand. It was an insane flurry of punching and kicking in a true dwarven gangbang.
It's also quite effective against forgotten beasts apparently. It might have taken a while but at some point some dwarf is going to punch it hard enough to smash it's brain. Never knew there was so much power in numbers.
I'm using this zerg tactic against every ambush from now on, so far no casualties on my side. I shudder to think how it would go if they were armed.
Power to the people useless peasant dwarves!!
