Dissapearing food?
« on: November 11, 2007, 01:55:00 am »

I started a fortress on a glacier, and left most of my food outside for a while, so I could dig out a dining room and a storage room next to it. When I went to put it inside, I noticed it was all gone!  It didn't get eaten - no shells or anything are left, plus there was way too much for that.

Everything else in the wagon is fine - the wood, the seeds, even the barrels the food came in are all still there. it's just the food that is missing.

The only thing I can think of is the cold destroyed it, but you would think that cold would preserve food not spoil it.

I managed to survive by....[Shame] cooking beer [/Shame] and it seems that the cold does indeed destroy meat and fish quite rapidly. Even the meat the traders brought was nearly spoiled by the time they got to my trade depot. Strangely enough, the plump helmets were totally unaffected.

So it seems the bug is actually cold damaging food. The cold should actually make it last longer without spoiling, or at the very least have no effect on it.

Even if food did get freezer burned, it is still perfectly safe to eat.

Is this what happened when I found "worn" and "mangled" fish in my decommissioned food stockpile? It happened in the winter in a temperate climate (frozen brook) by the way.
