[38a] Goblin ambushes a major nusance, not more fun
« on: February 09, 2008, 08:26:00 am »

How does a group of six invaders hide in an open plain? They're wearing STEEL ARMOR and running around at top speed.

They just killed my legendary glass crafter. =| He was out constructing walls to, ironically, keep the goblins out.

Ambushes are of the best things of the last update. They are more challenging than sieges  :)
The real problem isn't a the ambushes, but the lethality of crossbows and bows. Ambusherswithout one of these weapons are swiftly destroyed by my soldiers.

My martial arts mod has the weapons somewhat toned down. Although kobolds also carry bows, they are very basic and weak. Another note - all arrows stick all the time. Very useful.

I love ambushes. It makes patrolling guards useful.

Besides, I just made it so goblins can't use any long rang weapon.

So now they aren't invincible against melee rushes.

Yeah, just half the damage that arrows and bolts do and you'll be fine. find item_ammo.txt in the DF/raw/objects folder and change the damage settings on the arrows and bolts.

I've found the game a lot more challenging (and fun) since ambushes have been initated. It makes having a small military before you can be sieged a notable concern (plus it's a huge source of goods to sell to the human and dwarven caravans).

My only regret is that i've lost five dwarves total to ambushes. (My sheriff/hunter, one Siege Operator/Mechanic/Hauler, one halfway trained marksdwarf, and two wrestlers.) But hopefully my next immigration wave will solve this problem.) Hopefully better control over military units (like being able to order soldiers to retreat from combat, especially crossbowmen) will be implemented soon so that some of these losses can be avoided.

This does not solve the problem in any capacity.  It's not the raw damage that makes projectiles stupidly strong.  The disgusting critical hit rate is the problem, which cannot yet be modified.  Even changing projectiles to deal bludgeoning damage fails to affect the crit rate.

Its even more hilarious that a goblin can hit a trap and start leaving a trail of blood and severed limbs and still sneak past a dwarf 1 tile away

I think it would make more sence if ambushers had leather armour, but apart from that there great.

uhhhhhhhhhhhhh adjust crit rate of arrows to 0 in the raw? That's what I do.
