Dwarven Language
« on: June 20, 2011, 06:39:38 am »

Hi there, I'm looking for a language file with the languages in English if possible, so that the names are "Boatmurdered" rather than what appears to be some kind of European-style language. Not very "dwarf" I guess, but I'd prefer they spoke and named things in my language (English), rather than the conversion that comes up. I don't even mind if the dwarven first names remain. I've conquered the interface, but this language thing is a bit annoying.

EDIT: To actually answer your question: yes you can just change the language files to make them all English. There must be an English file somewhere made by someone but I don't have a link right now. You might want to make all the other races English too.

Haha, pretty anglocentric/separatist/misguided making an distinction between English and European. Dwarf Fortresses languages appear to be a bit like Swedish. Are they Tolkien languages or something? I'm not a big fantasy reader, so the fantasy language thing flies over my head a bit and doesn't really enrich the experience for me.

So you meant Scandinavian-style language?
It's probably based on Finnish, every weird language is.

<tolkien>DF "languages" are in essence rudimentary lexica (lexicons?); there's a lot more to a language than its individual words.</tolkien>

Not having much luck so far finding a replacement *language.txt for you. I'll dig a bit longer, yet.

Ah, Scandinavian. Yes, that seems about right I guess. I was looking in the direction of northern Europe. I'm don't know enough about those languages to distinguish them clearly (not that I know alot about others). I would have thought the languages came from existing texts. I won't underestimate Toady though.

Thanks for that. Don't sweat it too much. I will probably just take either some time to make it or some fancy find/replace scripting. Just thought I'd ask on the off-chance that someone else wanted to see it without these "languages" also.

I did just find

http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=4352

which lists language.txt files for a whole bunch of RL languages. But I've not downloaded it to check the entry for English yet.

edit: Yeah, the file you're looking for is in that pack.

dwarfs use the language_DWARF.txt wich looks like:
[OBJECT:LANGUAGE]

[TRANSLATION:DWARF]
   [T_WORD:ABBEY:kulet]
   [T_WORD:ACE:alak]
   [T_WORD:ACT:bidok]
           ...
you can replace that way:
[TRANSLATION:DWARF]
   [T_WORD:ABBEY:abbey]
   [T_WORD:ACE:ace]
   [T_WORD:ACT:act]
           ...
(wich seems long but it is only a regular expression ...)
or you can use one of the premade mod file, wich seems to have all the worlds by-the-way. then copy/extract it to your raw/object and you change the entity_default.txt and put the english [TRANSLATION:ENGLISH] translation in the place of [TRANSLATION:DWARF] (and other if you want)

On a side note European-style is like english, finish is not soo european style and definitivly not scandinavian.
Same basics if interested

Thankyou Mohreb & Aachen.

I swapped out the language_dwarf.txt with one containing only english but nothing changed. I presume this has to do with the [TRANSLATION:ENGLISH] bit or something.

Thanks for the extra info on languages also. Very interesting.

Well, shoot. Modding is certainly not my forte; perhaps you should bounce to that forum and see what else can be done? There's possibly something that needs to be modified in other entities or sommat.

to change an existing saves raws you need to modify in:
\data\save\region1\raw\objects
(for save region1 for example)
however in this case you need to keep exactly the same tags (wich should be ok for the changes but maybe a problem for redirecting on the "english" file)

Speaking both fluent Finnish and Swedish as well as English, "Dwarf" is very far from them both. And English is from my point of view pretty close to Swedish and other Scandinavian languages(not Finnish) as well as, say, German... But the language in DF is very rudimentary, I dont think there are any articles or post/prepositions, nor do the words have cases. Just (noun, and adjective, little pronouns) words in their first form with English word order.

If I remember correctly, DF's dwarven lexicon is somewhat based on Tolkien's dwarven language, which Tolkien derived from Semitic languages; see Hebrew in particular. Citation.

Edit: Anyone who can read French might be very interested in http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khuzdul as it is many times more detailed than the English version, for some reason. It was even a featured article, apparently :P
