Do fireballs shoot through fortifications?
« on: June 24, 2011, 04:30:29 am »

Do they? Cuz in a new mod I saw a embarkable pet (Slimelands, a cannon slug) that shoots flaming obsidian at enemies, and I was thinking of putting one tiled towers to pasture them in for defense. However, I want them to be behind fortifications, and shoot at a different z level. Is that possible?

creatures do not use natural ranged attacks on the enemies they can't path to. A bug, or may be a buggy feature.
Try an ugly (and most probably useless) workaround: surround the creature in question with pressure plates linked to hatches so that it would have a viable path to enemy until it steps on the plate, closing that path and openong another one and so one. Maybe some moment will be used to make ranged attacks instead of useless lumbering back and forth.

Cannon slugs actually shoot normal blobs of obsidian, but anyway, I'm not sure about fortifications. I've chained them to entrances, and they shot at enemies perfectly well, until they were decimated by a siege... If you never completely seal your forts like I do, you could just make a staircase down into main fort, with a long path to the target because of the bug nanomage mentioned.

I'm pretty sure they don't lumber back and forth, during arena testing, they would always shoot obsidian at each other until on the same tile.

You can use the same method as for GCS silk farming (invaders instead of the goblin), as long as you have a backup for any invaders that can break down doors.

Wow that's so great that it's not even ugly anymore.

Also see this for a similar idea.
