The wagon is falling. [38c - extension of bug 0018]
« on: April 19, 2008, 06:04:00 pm »

A bit ago, I noticed some rather odd engravings that kept showing up. Denoted by a W, their description was:

quote:
"Engraved on the wall is an exceptionally designed image of a wagon by 'First Apprentice' Tunrab. The wagon is falling.

Naturally, this piqued my curiosity, so I eventually decided to make a backup of the fort and abandon/adventure in it to examine the engravings more closely. All over the fortress, walls told the same story:

quote:
"Engraved is an exceptionally designed image of  the wagon by 'First Apprentice' Tunrab. Is falling. The artwork relates to the scuttling of  in Clubumbras the Fenced Tip in the early autumn of 1055.

(Clubumbras the etc. is the area my fortress is in, so far as I can tell.)

Not only did I not notice any wagon being destroyed, but there aren't even any cliffs on the map. Perhaps it fell in my moat and drowned...?

(this differs from previous reports as, so far as I can tell, it's the first time anyone's noticed it happening in Dwarf mode, as opposed to adventurer/legends.)

Addendum: huh! Legends informs me that , "" was born in 852, surviving over 200 years before its untimely scuttling in 1055. I had no idea wagons lived so long.

Yes, wagons are immortal.  They were the ancient guardians of the world before the elves flowered in the forests and the goblins grew from maggots in the caves.  They are benevolent creatures, and although their status as defenders of the mortal realm has faded, they still seek to preserve peace and harmony in their own small ways.  Using their great strength, they willingly carry tokens of peace between the settlements of the various races of the world, in an attempt to ease unrest, feed the hungry, and provide great riches upon all those they encounter.

It is a great travesty when any of these noble creatures is struck down, as every wagon death weakens the barriers between the world of mortals and the twisted realm, wherein the demons eternally plot their invasion of the fair folk..

That must be why the ever coveted wagon leather is so hard to come by these days. The wagons torn between their duty to help and their horror of transporting the tanned skin of their kind throw themselves off of cliffs to escape the inner conflict

This happened to me once. One of the tiles under a wagon was a frozen pool, and when the thaw happened the wagon was scuttled dropping almost half my booze into the pool. Luckily it was just a single 7/7 pool so I just mined into it and let it drain into my fort.

Extension: I have at least nine entries in my Historical Figures about , ""
On further examination, all of them were scuttled wagons.
Perhaps wagons shouldn't get listed in the HF, considering they're not named?
