If you have a backpack:
[p]ut your current weapon in your bag, then [r]emove your new weapon.

If you don't have a backpack:
Like UltraValican said, [d]rop your current weapon, then pick up the new one with [g].

Also, I noticed that when using a shield (and probably anything else combat related in your other hand) changing weapons makes the shield go to the top of the list of attacks to use when using aimed attacks, but dropping it and picking it back up after you have the new weapon in hand makes the weapon go to the top.

The REAL answer is to press t and aim your previous weapon in the direction of anything hostile where by munchkin logic, hostile is pretty much anything that moves or doesn't move.

Do this for anything you want to dispose of (EVERYTHING you would want to drop) and not only will you be knocking off the heads of bronze collosi with fluffy wamblers but you'll also be winning the game by having beaten crossbow via flying crocodile corpses and such.

Edged weapons tend to inflict more grievous injuries but I've known my cobalt shield (because the best defence is always a better offence) to chip bones nad make bandits hilariously give into pain.

Fen, adventurers can be right or left handed, so the shield in the wrong hand can affect it

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.
Sincerely,
The Administration

No, I've tested. The attacks given with items are in a first in, first out order. If you are standing with nothing in your hands, and you grab a *steel long sword* and a +bronze shield+ in that order, then your attacks will be:

Slash with sword
Stab with sword
Slap (Is it slap?) with flat of sword
Pommel with handle of sword
Strike with shield

If you grab the +shield+ first, then you can put the strike on top instead of the slash.
