This suggestion could be substantially broadened.

In Lord of the Rings, stabbing the Witch King slowly kills you or turns you into a wraith yourself and destroys your weapon.

Similarly, inflicting any injury, not just biting, on a creature could also result in a magical curse being inflicted on the killer. He who hunts monsters eventually becomes one...just so, an adventurer might one day kill a draconic beast and then wake up or stop traveling and find that his icon has changed...for the worse...

Not necessarily entirely for the worse though. Wasn't there a greek hero that bathed in dragons blood to become invulnerable? Of course this being Dwarf Fortress there would have to be some inevitable Fun involved. Like the blood makes any body part it coats really tough but dragons and other beasts can smell you a mile off.
