elves, magma, and fire
« on: June 07, 2011, 12:01:03 am »

I'm experiencing an issue in my current fort where the game crashes repeatedly and predictably a few steps after I pull the Trade Depot Cleansing lever.

For example:

1) A caravan of elves has arrived. They are now unloading their goods.
2) Pull Lever #1 (Depot Quarantine, schist floodgates slam home and the elves are trapped in a sealed chamber)
3) Pull Lever #2 (a second floodgate opens on the opposite side of the chamber, and magma is released into the room)

at this point I can only assume the elves are panicked and screaming as they huddle in the one shrinking corner of the room that hasn't been covered in magma just yet -- however, this is the point at which the game crashes every time. I suspect it has something to do with fire and smoke causing a sudden and catastrophic increase in CPU usage, because right about the time the game locks up something in there catches fire and starts to smoke.

is this a common issue? or could something else be causing this?

hasn't happened to me before. try turning off temperature. that way, things won't burn but the elves will drown to death.

File a bug report.  :)

DFFD it, and see if it runs on someone else's computer.  If it lags them enormously, then it's probably normal lag that's too much for your computer.  If they survive it, something is different with your computer.  If they can't survive it, but have done identical things before, then something is wrong with your setup.

I haven't had this issue before, but the large amount of flammables elves bring with their caravans seems like the most likely culprit for the problem. Does the lag begin when the magma hits the depot, or before then? Does the depot spend any steps submerged in magma before your CPU divides by elf?

Are you trying to view the carnage with 'k' when you crash?  What kind of crash is it?  If you are using k and getting booted unceremoniously to desktop my money would be truetype font bug.

Otherwise like Girlinhat says it could just be out of the capabilities of your machine.
