Observer Skill detects ambushes?

Do they? Or do you have to wait for one to be right next to a dwarf to get detected?

Yes they do. A higher Observer skill gives a higher detection radius. If I"m not mistaken, a very high ambusher skill for the thieves will reduce the detection radius.

So it's really something between those two skills.

If there is a novice ambusher kobold running around a Legendary observer dwarf, the detection can be done from a fair distance.

I don't think there's a reliable way to train this stat in particular, but I do know it took my military dwarves quite some time before they got good enough at it - maybe training or being posted at the gates helps. I'm also not sure how differing z-levels play on this, whether they increase, decrease, or outright cut the detection radius (if the observer is say too close to the cliff a few levels below the ambusher).

I've had a guard uncover kobolds at 1 zlevel lower, and from enough distance not to immediately charge at the critter. He was something around Great Observer, I think.

Soldiers train observer significantly during sparring sessions.  I cant find the thread with science right now but search for Military EXP Analysis

Also my hunting dogs have good observer skill, I gave them can learn, maybe they are training on ambushes, needs science.
