Cleaning...
« on: June 01, 2011, 03:50:06 pm »

My newest fort just fought off a simultaneous siege of Naga Men and Beak Wolves (FD mod ftw) and only incurred one casualty - my militia commander got a broken arm.  He's been sitting in the hospital since then, and is completely healed, except for one thing.  My dwarves refuse to clean his wound.  He's got no problems on the Health menu except that he has a "clean wound" order remaining.  His arm is already set, immobilized, and dressed, and it's completely healed already, but he won't leave until his arm is cleaned.  I keep getting the notice "Urist McNurse cancels clean wound: needs water source."

I've set water source zones next to the safe, clean community pond, ponds outside my fort walls, and even on the river halfway across the map, but none of them register as water sources.

What do?

They might be saltwater.
Also Make sure the zone covers a water tile AND an adjacent land tile.

That's probably it.  I'm quite close to the coast.  How would I get rid of said salt?

I've never done this myself (an oceanside fort is on my to-do list if I find a good spot), but here's what the wiki says:

Yeah, now that I think about it, saltwater is my problem.  I remember the embark warning me about it...  let's just hope I can build a well before my beloved militia commander dehydrates (they aren't offering him water, either).

I just thought of another question... Would it be worth trying to channel out an aqueduct all the way from the river (which is a pretty long distance from my fort) for a more steady water supply?  Or would the small natural pool inside my fort be enough?

I'd say doing some plumbing to get the river over is worth it. It's easy enough once you know how to get rid of water pressure (pass the water diagonally) then you can go to any level below the river without the need even for floodgates or anything to control the water. Just remember that water flows much faster under pressure so drop the water down a few levels first, get it to where you need THEN take the pressure out via diagonal pathing.

Thanks for all the answers, I'll do that eventually...

Anyway, the wiki was a bit ambiguous on this, but just building a well over the water source would be enough to desalinize it, yes?  I'd rather not have to build a cistern right now...   :(

The well doesn't actually desalinize it, it's actually a bit of a bug. The water is still saltwater, but your dwarves will drink/use it anyways if it's gotten out of a well, and the saltwater doesn't actually harm them.

The pump/cistern method is the only way to actually desalinize.

Heh, whoever thought dwarven stupidity could actually be a good thing...

His arm is already healed? Is he resting in a bed in your hospital zone? Try deconstructing the bed. I had a dwarf almost die from dehydration recently because of a stuck job, I deconstructed the bed he was in and he happily got up, got a drink and a bite to eat, and went back on duty.

I just solved the problem.  =P

I'm in the middle of constructing a large underground cistern under a well made with a golden chain and golden blocks, on a platform made of silver, with ramps leading up to it of bronze.   8)
