This is downright dwarfy
« on: December 08, 2011, 02:13:54 am »

So, I've seen things described as being dwarfy when they expend a gratuitous amount of resources or power to accomplish a simple task.

I recently bought a $1,200 computer for both gaming and music production. ATI Radeon HD6850 video card. AMD FX-6100 3.3GhZ 6 core processor. 8GB of RAM.

I can play Skyrim and Battlefield 3 on Ultra settings with no lag whatsoever.

Can I still suffer FPS related death in Dwarf Fortress on this machine? We shall see.

Well Dwarf Fortress uses the CPU to calculate everything and since it's not multi-threaded your fortresses will still die from FPS death.

This is true, but the CPU is absurdly powerful compared to my old PC(which usually ran Dwarf Fortress for around 10-15 years on a 4x4 area before it became unbearable).

I will report my findings in the morning(or afternoon) as it's 3:30 AM where I am.

6 CORES? Fuck I'll never have one of these.
But Dwarf fortress does not suppot multi-threading so it'll only run on a single core. But with a 3.3 core you can run it ok.

My understanding is that AMD processors are less useful for DF than Intel because AMD's benchmarking process is heavily biased for multi-threaded operations?  I might be misinformed, of course, and it's not like the difference will be more than negligible, I should think.

I've got an Intel i5 waiting to be put into a thing, for what it's worth.

DF doesn't use the extra cores, but you can still do the trick with setting DF to use one core and putting everything else on another core, so at least you have a whole core dedicated to the game.

Centration. Similar to Spacestation 13, but in 3D and first-person. Sounds damn awesome.
NanoTrasen Exploratory Team: SS13 in DF.

This benchmark site:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html
gives AMD FX-6100 Six-Core a note of 5,789 which places it between Intel Core i5-2300 and Core i5-2310.

They use multithreaded app for tests which means the intels would be approximately 50% better for single core apps because their 4 cores is just as good as 6 cores of the AMD processor. Or at least close enough to that.

Assuming it is not biased it seems Intels are generally better for DF.

It only depends on yourself if you play with reasonable settings.

If you want 300 dwarves on 8x8 embark then your FPS will die yeah.

All I know is that my I7 can run DF on a 6x6 embark with 200 dwarves without an issue. FPS = 50 which is what the cap is set to right now.

I created a world of the largest size(not in advanced mode) with the full 1,000 year history in about 3 minutes. Haven't had a chance to play yet but probably will tonight.

I'm running on an i5 with 200 trolls and 100 FPS right now.
