Tips on Fiery Fun
« on: May 30, 2011, 05:07:56 pm »

I got a forgotten beast that's on fire and spreads fire everywhere, and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips in dealing with these, as fire is allegedly nasty as fuck.

FBs made of fire aren't very durable. If you're worried about you soldiers becoming !!soldiers!!, use crossbows.

Sadly, this isn't much of an option now. I left a vulnerability in my fort in that fire beasts can just walk through my water, and my army is out of position, and I'll probably be forced to engage inside of a big vertical shaft.

Hope it dodges into the shaft then, huh?

Engage it with as few dwarves as possible, then. One soldier should be able to take it out. Trouble is, forgotten beasts composed of flame are a nigh-guaranteed death sentence for anyone very close by them, as when they die their fire ceases to be contained within their body and boils outwards, and that single burst is literally hotter than the sun. If you can engage with ranged weapons, do so, as if you melee it, whoever kills it will bleed to death in short order.

Looks like I dealt with it purely by getting lucky. I pretty much 1-hitted it, but regardless, a tiny amount of fire got onto my dwarves, and they nearly bled out, but luckily I have awesome doctors that probably saved them.

Also, yeah, like NecroRebel said, I just sent two dwarves and they both nearly died, but only because of the fire, that AoE would probably melt an entire squad even if you kill it instantly.

Really sad I couldn't keep him alive roaming the caverns though, he was doing wonders on melting out the water there, which I would like, so then I can terraform and make it a bit more dwarf livable down there. Is there any way to emulate this? Magma doesn't work, does it?

I believe it does, but I'm not sure if it would melt while a dwarf has it equipt.

You could obzidianize all the water there by dropping magma in it. You could also drain the water into the magma sea, but that tends to destroy your fps. But remember that fire FBs/Clowns/Titans also make the mud in the caverns go away, in case you want to farm down there.

Couldn't care less for the mud. Just don't want the water.

Simplest is explore where the cavern lake has reasonable-sized bottlenecks and drop cave-in plugs to seal it off with natural rock, then dig a drainage tunnel to the map's edge. Smooth and carve fortifications, open the drainage channel, and all the water that's been isolated from the edge of the map will drain off the map. Does that make sense?

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

related to this, I wanted to catch a magma man or fire man to make a goblin steamer trap (pump water into a pit with grates across the top over which the goblins walk). But I can't seem to lure them into my cage trap corridor, they don't seem to want to leave the middle of the magma sea. Is there any other easier way to reliably boil water?
