Silly question from a starter, haven't found anything.
« on: May 27, 2011, 11:08:17 pm »

The question is more generic but i'll ask with an example.

So i have this guy who's only skill is Adequate Thresher. Atm i don't need a threser for anything, so i'd rather put him to do some other stuff, and not only hauling stuff; is there any way to force him to mine?? It seems that adding mining to his labor preferences won't make him mine, as he simply doesn't know how to... ? He's not Dabbling or anything, he just doesn't know anything besides threshing.

Toggling mining on the dwarf is the correct way to do it - however the dwarf will only start mining if there is a spare pick.

Picks need to be either brought with you on embark, bought from a caravan (the first Dwarf caravan generally has one or two) or created using smithing.

So Ledi's been training the cats into an army of disposable warbeasts?  Why did no-one think of this sooner?!
Hellcannon seemed to be constantly on the verge of death and Levergedon before my turn helped, but ultimately what killed it was Ledi's cat army.

Mining and woodcutting need a pick and axe, respectively.  All of jobs (including fishing and metalsmithing) can be done with the Dwarf's Armok-given beard and innate talents.

Hunting requires a crossbow, quiver, and bolts as well. Also of note, those 3 special equipment professions should not be drafted into the military with those labors enabled; it causes a uniform conflict.

But if they are placed on Inactive with Civilian Clothing, the conflict "goes away".  They will throw all their clothes and tools on the floor... then redress themselves.

I haven't checked this on Hunters, but I know for a fact it works with Woodcutters and Miners.  You still need to unassigned their Civilian tool using Job before sending them Active, that still conflicts completely, but, they can be put in squads.

Ex-miners can be really effective soldiers in times of need. As they attack with their mining skill and the pick is a really decent weapon, a lot of damage can be done by a veteran miner and mining skill increases quickly due to...mining. Just remember to completly untoggle the mining labor before you draft him. Alas, woodcutting skill isn't used in combat, so even the legendary woodcutter isn't so legendary when it comes to cutting goblins.

Thanks for the suggestion, but Number4 is correct: [...] it would be easier and more predictable to just be a racist.

Did somebody just rule 34 two veins of metal?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I didn't even think about that. Not sure I'd use it personally though, imo military should be the fast-response team when traps can't handle whatever the threat is. Running to the barracks to change into uniform means mroe dead soapmakers and.....
....
I see what you did there.
