If it's a cave, it's probably open to the surface, so just move the view down a z-level or two and see what visible underground terrain is exposed.

I actually just left for a vacation so I cant tell you exactly what it's called. But It's a gaint angry lizzard man who breath poison gas. He is a cave resident. He seems content to chill out there untill I get a good millitary.
