The volcano erupting came close to those rapture predictions.

Suspicious no?

Kennings are bitching. Rock on, Viking naming conventions.

Just throwing that out there.

So, about "sjökull"; this translates directly into "sea/water hill" in Swedish. Is the direct meaning the same in Icelandic?

This is completely anecdotal, but I seem to recall someone mentioning that a larger volcano was supposed to be tied to the eruption of Eyjafjallajokul I think it was Lakagígar, I remember it was supposed to be worse...

...ok I'm being completely useless I'll shut up now.

Katla is the scary one connected to Eyjafjallajökull. Lakagígar is connected to Grímsvötn, and is actually scarier considering its history (the Skaftáreldar) :

Quote from: WP
The system erupted over an 8 month period during 1783-1784 from the Laki fissure and the adjoining Grímsvötn volcano, pouring out an estimated 14 km3 (3.4 cu mi) of basalt lava and clouds of poisonous hydrofluoric acid/sulfur-dioxide compounds that killed over 50% of Iceland's livestock population, leading to famine which killed approximately 25% of the population.

The Laki eruption and its aftermath has been estimated to have killed over six million people globally, making it the deadliest volcanic eruption in historical times. The drop in temperatures, due to the sulfuric dioxide gases spewed into the northern hemisphere, caused crop failures in Europe, droughts in India, and Japan's worst famine.

this is small fries compared to Skaftáreldar

Now I'm picturing Icelandic Space Elves. Battling demons of the Warp which emerge from the hellmouths of volcanoes. Now we know the secret--Iceland is actually a WH40K battleground.

The cloud of icelandic doom has reached the west coast of Norway now. It's actually affecting air quality quite badly (red dots means people with asthma or suchlike should stay indoors).

Local hourly stats for my area. It's for particles larger than 10 micrometers (I think).

edit: Uh, fancy government flash thingie isn't so good for hotlinking it seems. Here's what the graph I tried to link to looks like:

edit2: Doomcloud has passed by for now, levels back to normal.
